THE INVITATION

A self-compassion retreat for women

You are good at your life. You run the business, the household, raise the children, keep up with friends, often all of it at once. You’re not falling apart. You’re just tired in a way a weekend doesn’t fix, and it’s rare that you get time that is only yours. This is four days of that time. You walk in the mountains and swim in cool river pools, and in the mornings you move your body slowly, with no one watching and nothing to get right. You do it alongside other women who came for the same reasons. Nobody is here to fix anyone. You talk when you feel like it and stay quiet when you don’t. Most women leave saying they feel like themselves again. That’s the whole point.

THE PRACTICE

The body carries what the mind leaves behind

Years of being the reliable one settle somewhere, and it isn't the mind. This is where you turn back toward them, slowly enough that something can give.

THE turn

Kinder to yourself

You are almost certainly harder on yourself than you would ever be on a friend. If a friend told you she was exhausted, you wouldn’t tell her to try harder. You’d tell her to rest. You’d mean it. Self-compassion is just turning that same voice toward yourself. It sounds soft. It isn’t. It’s the harder thing, and most of us have had very little practice at it. Nobody teaches it here in a workshop. It happens in smaller ways. In how the days are set up so nothing is demanded of you. In the walking with nowhere to get. In the way the other women listen to you and you listen to yourself.

the walk

Medicine walk

A medicine walk is an old practice: you go into wild country alone with a question, and let the walking do what sitting and thinking can’t. The medicine isn’t a substance. It’s the land, the solitude, and the question itself. One afternoon, you walk out on your own, with one question to hold: who walks with me. Women have walked this land and read it with their bodies for a very long time, and for an afternoon you join them: out in it, living your question instead of turning it over in your head.

THE APPROACH

What we do, if we had to name it

We get unmade breath by breath, moment by moment.

1

Body

The whole universe arises and passes in this body. We tap into the body to return to the present moment. Somatic practice turns back toward what is here, at a pace slow enough to soften and open us up.

2

Sisterhood

For most of history, women did not do it alone. They raised children, tended the sick, prepared the food, marked the births and the deaths in each other’s company, and that company was where the knowledge lived and got passed on. We have mostly stopped living this way. For four days, we don’t.

3

Fire

Fire warms and it burns, it draws people close and it holds the dark back. Fire represents raw, untamed power, in which we will tap by making the fire together every night.

WHAT A DAY LOOKS LIKE

Awake in the wild

We could give you the timetable, but needing to know the shape of the day in advance is one of the things you came to put down. The looseness is deliberate, and harder to hold than a schedule. Daria has led enough of these to know when to press and when to leave you alone.

YOUR GUIDE

Daria Rasmussen

SOMATIC PRACTITIONER · MEDITATION TEACHER · FOUNDER

“There is a life in you that exists beneath everything you have learned to be. Before the usefulness. Before you learned to manage your softness and explain your strength. That life has not left you. It has been waiting, patient as old stone, faithful as land that knew you long before you knew yourself.”

I used to be the one who could handle everything. The one who didn’t need help and who had it together. I wasn’t in crisis, just quietly eroding. Running out of room for my own experience while I managed everyone else’s. I didn’t know how to stop. I didn’t know where stopping was allowed. What I needed was to put it down without being asked if I was okay and without having to explain myself.

Unmade is what I built from that. I lead this retreat because I have needed it myself, and because years of somatic work and contemplative practice have shown me what becomes possible when women are finally given permission to be who they were always supposed to be.
